Xbox 360 Exec Slags Nintendo Wii, PS3 Controllers
Published by Robert Staehlin April 4th, 2007 in Tech.Don’t expect to see motion-sensitive controllers on Xbox 360 any time soon.
Even though Wii is selling out everywhere and that PS3 recently broke launch records, Microsoft’s Chris Satchell says that Xbox 360 “will wait” on the technology. His philosophy is that “there’s no point building the hardware if nobody really wants it,” he told CVG in an interview.
“One thing I’m not certain of is that third-parties are super-excited about that motion control - or at least they’re not showing it with the games that are hitting the shelves yet… We’re yet to see a really good game on Wii that really says ‘OK that control kicked ass,’” he continued.
When it comes to PS3, he is equally unimpressed. “I think the jury’s way out on that,” hesaid. ”I don’t know if it’s really that meaningful or not. So I think the jury’s out on whether everybody really wants [motion control] so we’ll wait and see.”
I don’t see any slagging off anywhere in this article. Headlines eh, grab their attention then disappoint them with old news.
the 360 didnt have super awesome games when they hit the shelfs it took a whole year before they had anything rated (a) so thats all crap just one company slaming another nintendo has a three mont period before they even send devlopers a dev kit anyways so back off microsoft and take the butt kicking like a real man
Wow…a Microsoft exec ignoring reality just to support his company’s dumb technology decision? Never seen that before…
oh my god! that is such i lie! who ever wrote this article has never played a wii, or at least they never got a wii.
I mean, come on! Whats so good about graphics! Everybody so stupid… so crazy! Graphics are lame(well, not that lame)! PS3s lousy! PSPs stupid! And Xbox is so closed-minded!
I mean, come on, in the future everything will be by the push of a button! I not move a little! what is wrong with the wiimote! whats wrongs with a mii! whats wrong with internet! whats wrong with forecast! and whats wrong with virtual console!
Why do these consoles have to compete against each other! Wii makes a very good point. “Its not you are Mii, its Wii”, I mean surely these guys must not have any taste! I cannot take anymore of this piece of garbage.
That console’s hopeless. PS3s hopeless.
Well, i hope that company’s happy.

Article:
These headlines are a bit excessive. While some people may not agree with the MS rep’s comments, he only gave his opinion about the current state of motion-detectin gaming. I don’t se him being critical of Nintendo or Sony, just this new emerging tech.
PS3 is the best so all you ppl stop hating on it cuz u guys dnt got one it is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
It is interesting that someone from Microsoft said that kind of news, since Wii is flying off the shelves more than any other console has. Also, I remember hearing from someone that Bill Gates was cought saying that the Internet is a fad, and wouldn’t last, similar situation, don’t you think?
Super Mario Man: it is a nice console, the Wii, but, looking at technical specs, you could say that in some ways, it is equally impressive over each console. Microsoft, for one has a renouned gaming service, and that is what their last and current consoles are built off of. Sony has power-house abilities, which will extend greatly into the future. Nintendo, lastly, when the VC is built up, plus GameCube games, will have a giant library of games, and full backward-compatibility, or, if not full, will be 98% compatibility with Nintendo GameCube games, higher than you can currently get with Xbox 360, PS3 and PS2 systems with their previous generation of systems, because of the technology.
However, with Wii, one may not get the graphical capabilities of the other two. Although, Nintendo said long ago, or at least President Satoru Iwata said that the Wii is one of those systems that was to be a system that wasn’t competing, but, wants their system to co-exist with Xbox 360 and/or PS3. I could never really figure out why people think of it as a competing system when the head-honcho himself said that they weren’t competing directly, like the other two are. I also find it somewhat controversial that someone within the company itself said they were competing. Note to Reggie: Follow the zen-like state of your superior!!
Oh, the note to Reggie should be modified, “zen-like state” was not supposed to be a stereotype, and, “zen-like state” should be replaced by “attitude”
sorry about that,

Shawn: I understand that people have been rough on PS3, but, have you tried your own medicine and bought and tried a Wii AND an Xbox 360? Have you played with all of the features? I have on two systems, found them quite nice, and, am planning on buying a PS3 later on in its life, because, right now I am somewhat “consoled” out, and wouldn’t mind giving the ol’ PS3 a try. It is good to try before you judge. Just give it a thought.

These guys in Microsoft are JUST RIGHT! We dont really need that, not everything innovative is useful… X360 is really doing the BEST JOB here in nexgen, giving me exactly how much we wanted… I hope MS comes up with a Keyboard/Mouse adapter instead, make the online service free and get some ultra cool complete casings (not just faceplates) out for this console… also give developers more benefit and support. everything else is just great!
Classic Microsoft thinking… They are strictly following the rules that made their success : waiting for some technology to emerge, then, once it is proven market effective, invest heavily in it, buying and sinking competitors, and imposing their lame products to consumers because they have no other choices left.
Just stop buying Microsoft. Buy Sony, buy Dell linux, buy Apple… Add some heterogeneity to the high tech market. Stop this monopolistic thing.
I have been around a long time, in fact my first gaming console was the Commodore. I have every console every produced in the past. However this new “Next-Gen” series, the only one I have activly searched out (which took almost 3 months to find) was a WII. The PS/1-PS/2 never gave me that “wow” factor. It seemed all there games were 1st person shooters, sports games, or car racing games. None of which ever turned my crank. I do like Halo 2 on Xbox however. It is fun to go online and get yer butt kicked by some 11 yr old
The WII on the other hand, is completely new, the days of button mashing are over, it almost seems weird to have to use a directional pad, and push a series of 12 buttons in the correct order to get your character to do something. No doubt the WII’s graphics arn’ the best, but can you imagine what the WII 2 will be like? And thats the key, imagination, if you ain’t got one, you shouldn’t be playing video games in the first place! Cuz your the type to blame the video game for your killing spree at your local school
Typcial Microshit exec!! theres no point building the hardware if nobody really wants it, he says. What a PRAT!! So WHAT if there is no demand yet, it’s an extra bit of fun that’s nice to have it’s just an extra option. So typical, all of a sudden if there’s a demand they will go 110% into it and go on about how they are superior. Xbox boys are pathetic always holding back technology. PS3 is the future and they are too backward to go foward.
Anyone else think that the wii would be a million times better if nintendo redid the power glove? maybe even amp it up into power gloves…. I can easily picture the wii and a pair of form fitting gloves that don’t look as geeky as they used to (I still have my power glove and have it posed prominently in my house, love the thing, but it still looks silly hehe). I think if the wii were to have a pair then it could easily revolutionize gameplay, instead of reaching out a fist holding a remote to grab something… you simply reach out and grab it, then you could completely immerse yourself into whatever game you were playing using whatever props you wanted to simulate the game…
I think the real innovation has nothing to do with the controllers. Sure people are sick of hearing of HD and HD graphics, and sure not everyone has an HD TV. However, with HDTV prices dropping pretty dramatically how long do you think it will be before the masses (if not already) start to switch over? Graphics aside, the future of gaming and true innovation lies in online strategies. MS is more interested in delivering games, game content, movies, tv shows, etc., over their Live service. Sure you have to pay but come on people it costs $1 a week! Xbox Live Arcade titles are updated with HD graphics and online play, not just straight ports like Nintendo. I can play Ninja Turtles Arcade 1989 coop over Live with three friends! With the release of XNA development tools (for a very reasonable yearly subscription) people can now at home develop their own games on the PC, transfer them to the 360 and play them, and maybe even have their game sold over Xbox Live to other gamers. 98% of 360 games are online compatible and MS is focusing their new efforts on downloading full games over Live such as the new Oblivion expansion pack Shivering Isles.
Then there is the future to look forward to. MS has Project Gotham 4, FORZA, Dirt, Mass Effect, new versions of Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Halo 3, etc., with previously exclusive PS3 titles such as Ace Combat, Virtua Fighter, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, etc., also on their way to the 360. Wii has some nice first party titles coming like Mario, Smash Bros., etc., but they are spaced about 3-5 mos apart. The one game I was looking forward to was Advanced Wars Wii but that game isn’t even scheduled for this year. The Wii controller, although a nice toy, has done little but limit 3rd party support for the system and as a result N’s to be released games are VERY limited.
Wii and PS3 sales are due to hype and people wanting new tech, has nothing to do with the controller. Even if they were, it’s still WAY to early to tell if it will be profitable for MS to produce a similar controller and spend money developing exclusive motion controlled titles for it.
I think Nintendo is the one that needs to catch up. They have a decent controller but barely any current games, barely any good games being released in the upcoming year, and absolutely NO online strategy. You can spend $10 to download a rom you can get for free through the PC AND you can check the weather. Look past the overhyped controller and there is nothing to get excited about.
No offense people, but you need to read more than one article. You are buying into the message that the author is obviously trying to convey to readers and yet he really doesn’t have any facts just hearsay. It’s amazing people read one article, assume that person knows what he is talking about, and then jump blindly on the bandwagon. You need to realize that Nintendo, Sony, and MS don’t care about individuals, just profit margins. Is it really that profitable to release a motion controller and develop games for a company because everyone says it rocks 3mos into the Wii’s lifespan? Let’s remember that the 360 sold extremely well last holiday season when it was new and even had more units sold this holiday season then the Wii and PS3 combined. Sure you can come up with excuses why that is but I’m just saying businesses don’t jump on fads they look for cold hard numbers.
CptTickles: It doesn’t seem you know the full story either. Which company for years has offered a one year hardware warranty on their consoles? Which company has taylored more to fun? Which company tests the durability of their products? The answer to those three questions is Nintendo. They ensured for years that Customers had something comfortable, easy to use and guaranteed that customers had satisfaction that the consoles worked (with the exception of the NES “VCR”) and that customers were happy. You look at the number of Sony consoles that were sold, and calling that a record, how many of said consoles are running in the PS and PS2 series? I have seen a lot of semi-working or defunct Sony consoles over the years, it may be the best selling consoles, but, how many are in the dump/scrap yard compared to the number that are in people’s homes?
Kmach: Talking about Microsoft in a positive way is a good thing, but, it sounds like you are working for an electronics place on commission, trying to sell too many Xbox 360s, and if I recall, they sold nicely over a year, 10 M units, but, one has to remember the “shortage” of units they went through for about six months after the unit was released, you couldn’t see anyone have a unit because it was so bottlenecked at the time. You look at the Wii console, on the otherhand, compared to the other two, supply was better than Xbox 360 and about the same as PS3, but, has sold more in the past few months of its launch year than the other two. It is APPROXIMATELY double that of the number of PS3s, and, possibly by June, will have about the same number of units as 360 when the supply has finally cought up with demand.
But, Like I said about Wii in my first blog, they are NOT directly competing with Microsoft and Sony, they would not mind at all if the console COINCIDED with the other(s) in the same room. Plus, like, but not completely like Super Mario Man said, graphics are not important, it is the content of the game, not what size of screen or the clearest resolution you play it on. Sure, you look at what developers are currently offering for PS3 and Wii, and, it may not be completely taking advantage of their full specifications, but, do remember, we have to WAIT AND SEE what they will come out with. It is the same with the high definition media wars. We have to wait and see which will be the “victor” before we start jumping to conclusions (i.e. right now).
You look at the VHS/BetaMax wars, VHS won because it was cheaper, not because the picture was better (but, who could tell at the time on televisions with around 300-400 horizontal lines of resolution) AND, BetaMax was released first, and was around a while before VHS, and, it was found to be the underdog in most homes. It may be the same with Blu-Ray, because, once again, prices for HD-DVD players and media is significantly cheaper than most Blu-Rays. It is like VHS/BM again, where Sony has gotten a “head start” with their trojan horse(PS3), and, they know perfectly well that is what it is, even though they say it is significant to gaming too. Even though, most games on PC look similar, and are only at DVD capacity right now.
A similar outlook for HD_DVD and Blu-Ray looks to be upon us. (This is, of course, history repeats itself, and in Sony’s case, it has happened in their previous formats; Atrac3 format, Mini-Disc, MemoryStick, BetaMax, and others, which, are still used only with Sony products)
But, we can’t call any good winners right now, and, this business with these newer devices is risky, with Wii’s remote controller, PS3’s decision to include overkill processing power (which helps when using it in high-end rendering, but isn’t really needed right now) and Blu-Ray, and Xbox 360′ use of conventional gaming devices, and including a media streamer device.
But, I have no real complaints about the systems, just regurgitating information that I looked up on the Internet, and I have been researching these machines shortly after the release of the PS2, Xbox and GCN, and personal knowledge repairing and/or maintaining these units.

Also, Kmach, the high definition era is dropping in price, like you said, but, I would not call it dramatically, because, most sets in high definition are still out of price range for most, and, the fact that most of these sets do not have a digital tuner in them, so, that is one device you have to buy, and another you have to buy or rent from your cable/satellite company.
I, personally think it is not worth getting a set yet, and, if people hopped on with HD, you would see a lot of good-working televisions in our landfill, and, that is NOT a good thing. The only thing that I have that is anywhere close to high-definition is my computer systems and three computer monitors. But, I will note that when the older televisions die, or, when people want a change, the tvs will be a nice upgrade, but, in order to experience high-definition, one would need to upgrade other things too, their sound system for one (getting a minimum component quintaphonic (5.1 surround) stereo equipment would add to it), their current DVD players, so they will up-scale, tuner boxes, the lines from their house to the sattelite and/or cable systems with high-blocking shielding, their satellite dishes and receivers, then, like I said before, those without digital cable, would have to upgrade to a digital tuner because most HDTVs do NOT have a digital tuner, they are only, “HD-ready.” Also, to make this equipment to work, one would also have to get high-quality cables, which for about six feet, cost $40 Canadian, EACH, for connections to their components and speakers, professional-grade noise-reducing surge protectors, with filters on EACH plug, again, for about 16 outlets, runs at about a cost of $350 Cdn. So, to get “True” HD reception, you have invested in about $15,000 Cdn (~$11,500 US) worth of equipment. It just is not needed at this point. It is a big investment, and, well, one doesn’t need the cables or the power supply system I mentioned.
However, you will notice the noise effects, and, this new equipment does need good surge protection, because, you can’t simply unplug it from the wall, since it will most likely be in a wall unit. If you use the cheaper equipment, and an electrical storm surge comes down the power/cable/satellite/phone line, all equipment can and will be effected, or will be destroyed. It is also more fragile and sensitive compared to the older equipment.
I just find it too much of an expense, plus, until we have full HD in ALL channels, it also just seems like a luxury. Plus, people are pushing us into something that has not been fully established, so, what is the point?
