The social networking website MySpace has announced plans to hold amock presidential election on January 1 and 2. There are no age limits — voting eligibility is based on the stipulation that the registered users must reside in the United States.

“Iowa and New Hampshire may be selecting delegates, but the MySpace vote will be the first test of where candidates stand in the election year,”explained MySpace President Tom Anderson in a statement.

Of course, my sister in the Stateshas eight accounts right now andthe number israpidly climbing, so the results aren’t going to be exactly scientific. Still, this will be the first election in which the YouTubes and MySpaces of the world and the like could potentially have an effect on the actual outcome.

“I think this is a fantastic way to engage young people,” said Forrester Research analyst Peter Kim. “The driving force behind social networking–that people want to be heard and connect–is bound to have a huge impact on future political races.”

Straw polls results prior to the election will be regularly posted at impact.myspace.com.
