Xbox 360 Boss Disses PS3 And Wii
Published by Ian Klein November 11th, 2006 in Nintendo, Microsoft, Xbox 360, Sony, PlayStation 3, Wii.The only true competition to Xbox 360 is Nintendo Wii, and had PS3 been on the market this holiday season, Microsoft would have prevailed. These are the sentiments of Microsoft’s Neil Thompson, who said things in a recent interview to raise the ire of both Wii followers and PS3 devotees.
“It has the potential of taking consumers spend and wallet share away from us in general, but at a product comparison level it’s not competing with us at all. It’s an innovative, low-definition product,” said Thompson about Wii.
“People will make a clear decision as to whether they want that sort of product a kids toy or they want high-definition gaming and entertainment and all that it brings.”
As for PlayStation 3, Thompson laments that Sony’s next-gen console won’t be on the market to do battle this holiday season.
“In a lot of ways we’d like people to put the system side-by-side and see whether people want a platform where they’re paying for Blu-ray straight away. Is Blu-ray that important to you that you want to buy into that platform right now and spend GBP 500 doing that? Or do you want a gaming system that has more high-definition gaming content today, has a better online service and provides you the choice of whether you want to upgrade to the next-generation of DVD platform in the future?”
“We would have quite liked to have gone head-to-head on those issues because we feel very strongly that we have an incredibly compelling offering,” he finished.

WTF is with the pic of the telephone?
Well said, excapt that Wii is not just a kids’ toy. It is about to be the most popular kid and adult video game system of this generation. It’s reach even extends to grandparents, significantly unlike Xbox 360 and PS3.
Calling Nintendo’s console a child’s toy is crap. When it’s being hailed as the Holy Grail of gaming by just about every critic who’s played it, it’s pretty obvious that any and all bashing from competitors (even competitors who are trying to claim they aren’t competing) is to try to discredit the Wii for fear of it’s pending success.
Clearly Nintendo is taking it this round. Microsoft should be ashamed for trying to say “we’re not competing with Wii” and calling it and insulting it regardless in the same breath.
Well, that is a good argument in terms of the 360 vs PS3 bit but id say a rather weak debate againts the Wii. A kids toy, come now. You have to think of a better excuse then that. Sure the system has lower specs but simply a kids toy it is not! If all you need in your video games are good graphics then your not a true gamer and should get a 360 or actually get a Ps3 since ts bettr for that. But if you are a true video game fan then you should go with the company who knows what its doing and that company is Nintendo.
So if Microsoft wants to be childish and make pethetic insults towards the Wii then let them.
The winner won’t be the console with the best hardware. It will be the console with the best software and game play.
That’s a good idea from the xbox 360 boss, they should hold some kind of debate just like the presidential debates. PS3 would have totally been shown off to be a ripoff, which it is. If you are reading this trust me the xbox 360 unlike the PS3 is reasonably priced, besides you can hook it up 2 your Media Centre PC. Not to mention the online service (xbox live) is far much better than the PS3 copycat.
How is the Xbox 360 any more reasonably priced than the PS3? The low end PS3, is quite comparable to the high end Xbox 360 (it has the same amount of HD space, comes with wireless controllers, etc.). For the 100 dollars extra, you are getting a next gen Blu Ray Drive. That is the same cost as the Xbox 360 HD Dvd drive. Plus you get free internet capability for most games, unlike 360, where you have to pay 50$ a year!!
I can agree with someone claiming that they dont need a next gen drive, and so for them the PS3 is not a good fit, but it is definitely comparable, if not better in value than the 360.
you cant even compare harddrive space between ps3 and xbox 360 because game saves for…say… tony hawk project 8 are 2mb for xbox 360 and something crazy like 364mB for ps3 ..who will run out of harddrive space first….
and just to throw this in… Wii Rules and is takin it for sure
The Wii is no where near a childs toy. It’s grafics may not be the best but i would still rather play a game that is fun. Like pressing buttons is really not fun, and after a while it just becomes a chore. Nintendo is the only system taking risks, everyone else copies them and gives them no credit. I bet the people at Sony and Microsoft even will be playing on Wiis.
#@%# the Wii and the PS3, I want that damn phone!
Wow. A Child’s toy?
What’s up with everyone goin’ crazy on graphics? It’s all about gameplay, and the wii is taking a step in the right direction. Also, I bet if Sony came out with the exact same thing as Nintendo n called it the Sony Wii, everyone would want to get it. Everyone will get anything Sony; everyone thinks that ps3 is the best. It’s ridiculous. I kno that Nintendo will not win the console war just becuase nobody wants nintendo anymore, but for real, nintendo is gonna have the best system out.
Yes Mike, I agree, I had one of those phone’s in the 70s - now THAT’s a toy with features!
“you cant even compare harddrive space between ps3 and xbox 360 because game saves forsay tony hawk project 8 are 2mb for xbox 360 and something crazy like 364mB for ps3 ..who will run out of harddrive space first.”
please back up this statement
Okay, people need to learn how to use their head. Why does everyone on here have a 3rd grade spelling/grammar level? We’re adults right? PS3 will have great graphics, XBOX 360 is basically a standalone computer, and the Wii has a new approach to gameplay, and doesn’t have any desire to back HD DVD OR BluRay…and I say right on to all 3. They are all carving out their own niche, and that’s what the market is about. Blu Ray and HD DVD will likely consolidate, and eventually everything will just be S-HD-BluRay-XTreem-100GB-QUAD-LAYER formatted, or something like that anyways… Wii has backward compatibility with all other Nintendo systems, and it will likely be forward compatible with new technologies Nintendo puts out as well. (Nice…) PS3 will likely be the standard, eventually, because we all know how we REALLY feel about Microsoft. Nintendo will be a system that makes money, because, they are the only system that turns a profit, even when people weren’t buying their systems (yes, it’s true…) because Nintendo is great at setting the bar high without spending through the nose developing their systems, or selling them below cost. I look forward to seeing all 3 in a Blockbuster store near me, and in 6-12 months, I look forward to playing their emulated versions on my computer, for free, like we all do…
Wii Will Wii Will ROCK YOU!
Nintendo will reign supreme once again. Better yet, it’s with cheap and reliable hardware. They realize that it’s innovation and clever programming that will bring the people in. Not flashy, expensive, powerful, “do-it-all” eyesores of the entertainment center.
Word.
I will just say this:
I left console gaming nearly a decade ago, when the major competitors began to release “games” that were merely upgrades of previous titles and at a time when PC gaming was becoming cheaper and more fulfilling, especially in the “Polygon Count” department.
Since then, I have often derided console buyers as “chumps” for paying, repeatedly, through the nose for what amounts to an upgraded video card and for new versions of games that amount to no more than a texture upgrade. There were a few exceptions here and there, but by and large I thought I would never again own a console.
But Nintendo has changed that by offering something that console gaming has, for me, lost: Fun. Now, for the first time in a long time, I am buying a console. And you can bet it’s not the over-priced, DRM-ridden, featureless-PC-wannabe the “PS3″, or the reasonably-priced but still DRM-ridden, featureless-PC-wannabe the XBox360.
It’ll be the Nintendo Wii. And I’m not alone. I know dozens of “retired” games who are planning on buying a Wii. This is a market the closed-system of console-centric analysts has not and will not take into account. Much, I think, to the economic detriment of Sony and Microsoft.
I think MS is grabbing at straws now, especially with their flop of a brown MP3 player.
Wii will be great for all generations, so that the family can connect again. The PS3 will probably be the best for some college friends getting together who want to play some “almost” realistic sports. The same could probably be said for the 360. And yes, of course the statement “do you want a gaming system that has more high-definition gaming content today” is true, for now. Does anybody know how many HD games were released when the 360 came out? I don’t, but I’m going to guess it wasn’t that many. They have a head start, so of course they are going to have more HD games on the market today. But once developers start to unlock all the possibilites in the PS3, 360 can say “we are the weakest link, goodbye!”
I used to own that phone, when I was a kid. I think it is roughly as technologically advanced as the Wii.
I totally agree with you Mark Goodwin.
ok lets settle this fanboy argument once and for all
You CANNOT have the wii in the same “war” as the ps3 and xbox360, and why? simple, its not a “gamers” machine. Although I dont like to use the word “toy” as nintendo can be very innovative, the wii is created for an interactive party type of atmosphere. More akin to playing twister than video gaming. The only similarity to the other consoles is theyre video game BASED, but seek a totally different audience. This is proven when you consider gamers absolutely HATE the wii.
In some ways the wii advances gaming being interactive, in others it sends it backwards. The average age of gamers is almost 30, but if the wii had its way, the average would probably be 15.
Interaction can actually have a negative effect on the whole experience, youre too worried or concentrating on the control system, you dont get “into” the character.
Besides, you cant sit with a beeer slouched on the sofa and blast away with the same feeling. Nintendo has never gone for realism in the graphical department, and that spoils it a lot for me.
Good luck to the wii, but as far as the console war goes, its a different system, its not in the same war.
