Braben: Nintendo Wii’s Manhunt 2 Shouldn’t Be Made
Published by Robert Staehlin September 10th, 2007 in Gaming, Nintendo, Wii.As you may have heard by now, Manhunt 2 has been trimmed down and is now slated for release on Wii, PS2 and PSP on Halloween. in North America.
Even with the new cuts, however, there’s still a contigency of people out there who believe the game should have been never made at all.
Daniel Braben, the man behind Elite in the old days and founder of Frontier Developments after that, feels that Gears Of War’s rating of 18 lessens the meaning of the rating systems and prompts parents to ignore the system.
“This means that when a more genuine 18 comes along, parents assume it is no worse than Gears of War, and is perhaps why Manhunt 2 was banned, as they felt they could not give it the same rating as Gears. Having said that, from what I’ve heard of Manhunt 2 (I haven’t had the chance to play it), it is not the sort of game the industry should be making, as it is inevitably going to attract controversy,” he said in a recent interview.
“While it might have brought short term gain to Rockstar, it damages the reputation of the industry as a whole, long term. We do need a strong, consistent rating system, where 18 really means it, and is enforced, and then it may be more acceptable to make such games, or to bring in an additional rating (as in the US) of Adults Only - which are only sold in very restricted places.”
