PS3 Takes On Wii, Xbox 360 With Price CutSony is getting aggressive in its battle against Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.  The company today announced a $100 price cut for the console, bringing the price down to $599 in the United States.  Unfortunately, no announcements have been made for any region outside of North America yet.

PS3 has been trailing both Wii and Xbox 360 ever since its North American launch in November 2006.  Nintendo’s console costs $250 while Microsoft’s is $299, $399, or $479 depending on the model.

Richard Doherty, an analyst at Envisioneering Group, believes that the move will help sales in a big way. “The price cut should take more away from Microsoft,” he said. “A lot of sales that would have gone to the Xbox Elite will go to PlayStation.”

Sony also announced an 80GB PlayStation 3 model for $599 which will be packaged with critically acclaimed title MotorStorm.
