Senate Republicans Kill Immigration Bill
Published by Staff June 8th, 2007 in World. The controversial immigration bill backed by President Bush suffered a massive defeat in a test vote by the Senate yesterday. The vote tally was 45-50 against limiting debate on the bill, which was 15 shy of the 60 that the bill’s supporters needed in order to succeed.
The majority of Bush’s own party voted against the bill, which critics claim gives amnesty to illegal aliens.
“I am deeply disappointed that so many of our Republican colleagues have blocked tough, fair and practical immigration reform. The White House has had six months to work with Senate Republicans toward a solution, yet it failed to show the necessary leadership to get this bill passed,” said Majority Leader Harry Reid in a statement.
“Senate Democrats have given Senate Republicans ample time to amend this bill, twice extending the timeline for debate. We have gone out of our way to make this process fair and equitable, moving through more than 40 amendments – including 20 yesterday alone. Yet as much as they talk about the importance and urgency of immigration reform, a group of Senate Republicans has irresponsibly turned its back on border security and the 12 million people who are living in the shadows of our society. The immigration system remains broken. Senate Republicans and the White House must come to the table in good faith if we are to fix it.”

Blah! Blah! Blah!
So you want a bill so bad you’re willing to let a very bad bill pass? I’m a Democrat! The bill was a bad bill from the word go.
Put together by Harry Reid and 11 other pro amnesty senators with the added input from pro amnesty groups like La RAZA and the US Chamber of Commerce. Done behind closed doors. Talk about a way to put a bad taste in your mouth if you are an American that questions the fairness of our system.
There were so many revolting pieces of this legislation I just don’t know where to begin. I particularly liked the one where illegal immigrants did not have to pay back taxes unlike legal American citizens. Or how bout background checks must be completed in 24 hours. The fine was just about what an illegal alien pays to a coyote to illegal cross the border and they had eight years to pay it back. Does our citizenship come that cheap and easily? Nobody even knows how much it will cost to implement the bill. Billions? Trillions? In business you find out what something costs before you approve it. What makes the US government any different? And on and on….
You want a good bill most people will agree on? Secure the darn border first. Prove to me and millions of others that you mean business when you say you want to do it. Why should we trust a President and a government that have ignored immigration laws on the books for years? Have been kept on a short leash by big business and the corporate elite? Have ignored the will of the people to close down the borders especially after 9-11 and have flunked miserably at it.
WE DON’t TRUST YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You want our vote? Secure the border first.
You want amnesty for 12-20 million? Secure the borders first.
You want forgiveness for making a mockery of our laws? Secure the border first.
That is our grand compromise. Secure the borders first and then you get your amnesty.
