NPD reports Wii and DS top video game sales in MarchWii and DS won the battle for March supremacy in console and handheld sales respectively.  If this looks familiar, it’s because Nintendo Wii and DS have been topping the monthly charts for quite a while now.

According to market research firm NPD, Nintendo’s uber-popular Wii was again the No. 1 selling video game console, with sales reaching 259,000 units altogether.   Number 2, surprisingly enough, was PlayStation 2 with sales of 280,000 units.

The second next-generation console for March was Xbox 360, coming it at a healthy 199,000 units.  And Sony’s PS3 came in last at 130,000.   Although, if one counted both PS2 sales with PS3 sales together, the numbers don’t look quite as dire for Sony.

On the handheld side, DS went a bit over the half million mark with 508,000 units flying off the shelves.  Its competition, the PSP,  trailed Nintendo’s handheld with 180,000 units sold.
