Microsoft talks EMI iTunes deal, Zune next? It appears that Microsoft’s love affair with DRM may be coming to a close.

Following the Apple deal with EMI to provide unprotected songs on iTunes, Zune may be next. “The EMI announcement on Monday was not exclusive to Apple,” said Katy Asher, a Microsoft spokeswoman to IDG.

“Consumers have made it clear that unprotected music is something they want,” she continued. “We plan on offering it to them as soon as our label partners are comfortable with it.”

Jason Reindorp, head of marketing for Zune, echoed this DRM-freesentiment to the Times Online.

We’ve been saying for a while that we are aware that consumers want to have unprotected content,” said Reindorp. This does open things up a little bit. It potentially makes the competition more of a device-to-device or service-to-service basis, and will force the various services to really innovate.

An EMI spokeperson confirmed that Negotiations with other platforms, such as Zune, are ongoing.
