Sony: Unlike Xbox 360, PS3 Won’t Use Gamerscores
Published by Robert Staehlin October 22nd, 2006 in Gaming, Sony, PlayStation 3.No Gamerscores or Achievements for PS3
You can always identify an obsessive Xbox 360 gamer by their obscenely high Gamerscore, but it’ll be a tad harder to detect the same behavior in a PS3 owner. Sony is leaving Achievements and all the like to Microsoft; PS3 isn’t having any of it.
When asked about the Gamescores and Achievements, Sony executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America responded: “We didn’t mention that, but it is our intention that we would have it–although I think it would be game-centric. It’s very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples’ success on Madden.”
Rather, the company is going with a game-centric leaderboard system. However, this ranking system will not be included in the launch games.
“So the publisher [of each game] will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis,” said Tretton. “The intention right now is not to have something that is pan-platform. We do intend to do that with our [first-party] stuff.”
At least that’ll put a damper on black market sales of such items.

While viewing Resistance:Fall Of Man footage, I saw “skill point:…” flash up after several sniper head shots. I am guessing this means thata lot of games will actually have the equilivent of gamescores, but will only be a checklist within the game, and not relate to anything out of game.
ohh woow…so what?
Ummmm, I fail to see the upside of only having “skill points” or basically a ranking system for certain games IF the developer chooses so (which means a lot of games won’t include the feature). Are game specific points any different from a Halo 2, Ghost Recon, etc., in-game ranking systems for the 360? No. Not only do 360 games already have in-game ranking systems/leaderboards but also gamerscores so every gamer can see what games you have played and how well you have played in them as a whole (VERY addictive by the way).
What happened to Sony copying MS’s “Gamerscore Points” with their “Entitlements?” Sony said their online plan was going to be much better than Live but it doesn’t sound that they have the ability (or perhaps just poor planning) for much cross game content like friend invites, stat tracking, and gamerscore points. Sounds like Sony dropped the ball but are trying to turn it around and make it seem like it’s another insignificant MS feature that gamers don’t want. WOW, the $600 PS3 is going to have in-game ranking systems?! Amazing, since games have had this feature now for some time especially on the PC.
as always sony lies, they realized that king of service is difficult to be succesful without fees, so what sony wants is to have something cheap to pseudo-compete againt xbox live and make sony fans telling is better because of its “CHEAPNESS” jojo.
Sony seems to be doing a poor job out of the gate coordinating with their 3rd party developers on their online procedures and strategies. I was shocked when I read an IGN interview with Bethesda about downloadable content on the PS3 version of Oblivion (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/738/738319p1.html) when Todd Howard (Bethesda Executive Producer) said:
IGN: Has Sony been able to provide you with enough information so that downloadable content for Oblivion will be available for the PS3 version somewhere down the line?
Howard: How Sony will handle this is still a little fuzzy to us, but it is our intention to make that content available for PS3 as soon as we’re able.
This interview is from October 11th! It’s a little close to launch for Sony to still be forming their online system, in my opinion. I was completely unimpressed with XBox Live prior to the 360 launch because of exactly this reason - each developer had too much to do themselves; not enough consistency between games for the online experience (only Halo 2 really nailed it last gen), but MS really stepped up to the plate with the 360, and I think a big part of why it works SO well is that they had everything in place well before launch with their developers. Developers obviously understood downloadable content, putting out demos over XBL, achievements, gamer points, match-making and leaderboards BY LAUNCH. This does not bode well for Sony’s online experience. And I’m tired of them saying they’re going to leave it in the hands of developers. That’s a cop-out for them saying they don’t want to or can’t do it themselves. I’m still cautiously optimistic based on what I’ve seen so far but dropping a system-wide achievement system is a horrible idea even if they don’t want the gamerscore system. Makes me wonder if MS patented it and Sony’s trying to lie about why they’re not doing it like they did with rumble force-feedback in their PS3 controllers.
so, does that mean no ‘Entitlements’?
so what who cares about some lame gamer score
true gamers dont need that.
gamerpoints also allow easy identificaton of spam accounts, as do the reputation markers. i wouldn’t be hyping the lack of said features on a free network. what penalties will be possible when griefers have no financial penalty for misbehaviour, nor any social penalties?
And? The gamerscore doesnt really show anything about obsesiveness. I would say I am quite an obsessive gamer but you wouldnt think that if you looked at my gamerscore.
Now it seems that Sony are now clutching at straws with their online capabilities.
