Nintendo Wii Perfect For Elderly, Moms, Guys With Eyeliner
Published by Ian Klein September 21st, 2006 in Gaming, Nintendo, Wii.You should be playing WarioWare: Smooth Moves on Nintendo Wii with your 87 year old grandmother, her 19 year old nurse, andyour 24 year old sexually ambiguousstepbrother who sometimes purchases cosmetics, according to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.
“We want to appeal to mothers who don’t want consoles in their living rooms, and to the elderly and to young women,” he said in a recent interview when talking up Wii. “It’s a challenge, like trying to sell cosmetics to men.”
And you thought we were making it up. If Nintendo can succeed in crossing the generational and gamer/non-gamer gap, it could be the the biggest system in the history of mankind.
“Wii definitely could become the most popular console of all time,” said Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Enterbrain Inc. “Non-gamers can see how fun it is just by looking at people playing it, and that’s very different from the PS3 or Xbox 360.”
Not wanting to miss out on the hyberbole, Nomura Securities Co. analyst Eiichi Katayama also waxed poetic about the upcoming console’s potential to change the world.
“Wii is the first machine that has the potential to truly prompt people to use the Internet on their television,” he opined. “It could turn into the next-generation television.”

Wow. Its a challenge, like trying to sell cosmetics to men.
That is a simile.
He is comparing selling video game consoles to mothers, elderly, and young women; because that is a big challenge. He never said he is targeting the console at guys with eyeliner. lol.
This is bad journalism. *rolls eyes*
Oh? I am a big fan of Nintendos console but i am not quite sure they can label themselves as the next generational leap for televisions. Unless they allow the users of the wii to make the wii quickly switch between game and television and maybe include options to record shows and show what time they will start.
I’m relatively sure he was kidding there, Mark.
Quickly switching between TV and games is as simple as pressing the input button on the remote. But the Wii can’t have TiVo functions with its flash memory, you need lots of space for that.
Anyway, I don’t think that Katayama meant that the Wii would change the way people watch television. Rather, it would make it easy for people to use the internet on their television.
Considering that Wii will have that quick power-down sleep mode, (and quick power-up off sleep mode)…Then it is easily possible to switch between watching TV and playing Red Steel (eg).
Considering you can usually (at least for NZ tv stations) look up what the program listing is on the net, and with Wii’s Opera browser…badabing! got it…:O
…ok, that was just responce to one of these replies…:P

remember that Nintendo Wii is not supposed to be a complete set-top box, yet is very close in my opinion! (all it would need is a TV-tuner, and a programme save HDD).
I think it would be awesome if it did, but then … it’s not necessary..
What games are there that would honestly appeal to your gran or mum? I think it would be awkward playing certain games with them.
