Rumor: PS3, Wii Pre-orders Require Trade-InsFor people looking to pre-order a Nintendo Wii or PlayStation 3 from GameStop/EBGames, there’s good and bad news. The good news is that the retail chainsare purportedly starting to take pre-orders for Wii and PS3 this Monday, September 18. You might want to sit down for the bad news.

The bad news is that if this poster is legitimate, then “cash and store credit will not be accepted” in order to complete the transaction. The only way tosecure the reservation will be to trade in fifty bucks’ worth of used games. And as we all know, the trade-in value at these store chains are about as fair as the local pawnshop.

It gets worse — even if one jumps through all the questionable hoops, there’s still no guarantee that the person will even have their Nintendo Wii or PlayStation 3 on launch day. Heck, there’s no guarantee that they’d gettheir hands on these puppies before Christmas.

The alleged fine print, from the gang over at Joystiq:

“All trades must be in working condition and are subject to manager approval. As GameStop cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, the reservation deposit will only guarantee a spot in line when the PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii becomes available. The reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase by Christmas.”

This should still be treated as rumor at the moment; we’ll pass on more information once the program is either confirmed or denied.
