Nintendo Wii Controller, Meet PS3 SixasisPlayStation 3 has been losing the public relations battle with Nintendo Wii, especially when it comes to their controllers. The PS3 Dual Shock lost its rumble after Sony lost a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Immersion over the controller’s vibration technology. Wii has its groundbreaking controller on the way which has wowed the crowd ever since it debuted at E3.

Let’s face it, the new thing is always more interesting at least in the short term, and a lot of people want to get their hands on a Wiimote/Nunchuck combo.

But back to PlayStation 3, the controller can’t really be called a Dual Shock Trois since it doesn’t “shock” anymore. If the gang at 1UP are correct, then the new name for Sony’s tilter will be SIXAXIS. Here’s the details from a patent filed by Sony:

The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability.

Sony has denied that there is a new name, telling 1UP “We haven’t yet announced the name of the controller.”

tim i don`t suppose you realize but the tilt on the ps3 controller IS their invention they have held the patent on this since 1994 and it works differently to the Wiimote and was being developed long before the Wiimote was. :)

I dont agree with you Cap, having a patent and using a patent are totally different. Sony must have been more than likely never to use the patent, but when they realised Oooh Nintendo did somthing right they went into their archives and found there patent.

Man Im sick of Sony and others ripping off Nintendo!
    1. Nintendo made the D-pad, everyone has the D-pad now.
    2. Nintendo made the Anolog stick, everyone uses the anolog stick.
    3. Nintendo made the rumble pak, Sony attempted to make a rumble pack. 4. Nintendo had the A B X Y buttons, Xbox has A B X Y.
    5. Nintendo made he motion sensor controller, and im sorry Sony fan-boys, but Sony Ripped off Nintendo there too!

Man i really hape Nintendo wins this round, they diseverve it!

I guess thats one of the down sides to competition in the console industry, although it brings down the price of the consoles, it means that companies hinder the other companies progress, not allowing sony to use rumble in their controllers has a negative impact on gamers.
Shows how it really is a business after all, and that the companies who make the systems don’t really have that much in common with the users, as their want of people to only use their system, means that other systems are made less enjoyable where they could have excelled and grown with the use of that technology.

My god, finally a site with some viewers that aren’t morons. All the other sites posts tend to sound something like,
    “You suck”
    “No Xbox sucks”
    “Ya well you’re Sony’s B****”
    “Ya well you’re my grandpa’s B****”
“fifgosdiyfs8d asfohasfiahsf o4359%Eijfdsaojf eag73r^rIFE98E89EWR8Y34……… that showed you eh”
wtf is with that kinda stuff I know most people online refuse to learn how to spell but that’s just beyond ridiculous, sounds like they’re just a giant ball of filth pulsating in front of a screen mashing the keyboard with its one good limb.

I think it’s alright for ppl to have a console they prefer, but I don’t understand why some ppl partake in console discrimination (sounds funny doesn’t it?). I always thought that if your system, whatever it is, plays games that you enjoy then you should happy, right? Whether it be PS3 or Wii or 360, once great games are being made for your system of choice then shouldn’t everything be ok? I originally bought a PS2, mainly because of the large variety of games that existed for the system. With that in mind, I would hope that the PS2’s successor, the PS3, would continue along those lines; manufacturing games that I like to play. The American market is very different to the Japanese market, as well as the European market. These are just cultural differences. People cannot possibly expect everyone to have the same tastes. Different cultures, potentially different tastes. I am from neither the USA, Europe nor Japan and it actually shouldn’t even matter where I am from. All that should matter is that you want good quality games. I say at the end of it all, whosoever has games that I would enjoy playing, will get my hard earned cash. However, I have made up my mind about not buying the Wii though. Not that I don’t believe that it’s a great system with great features and so on. It’s more on a personal note. I am very lazy and just don’t think I will enjoy flailing around my arm that much. Sounds like too much work. My comfort zone is with a controller, but that’s just me.

    Max is right.

Just buy what you want and be happy with it, and let people do what they want too.

I agree with sony ripping off Nintendo But Xbox doesn’t do that Xbox has their own things too. Sony actually rips them both off. Nintendo had A,B,X,Y first yes. But What other buttons is Xbox gonna have.

I guess they could number them 1 2 3 4. The fact is When sony sees an Idea that either Nintendo or Xbox has be it online service or motion sensing control Sony sees it gets jealous and then claims they had the idea first. I remember when Sony disliked Nintendo’s new gaming approach and now they just come out and deny everything they said and say that motion sensing is the way to go? They’re completely dependant on other people’s ideas that’s pretty sad
