Vitamin D May Lower Pancreatic Cancer RiskTwo long-term studies show that getting your RDA of Vitamin D may cut the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. The top methods of getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D are diet, supplements, and our favorite freebie, the sun.

In the large studies, adults who got 300 IU to 449 IU daily turned out to have a 43% lower risk of pancreatic cancer. The recommended intake for adults aged 51-70 is 400 IU per day.

Vitamin D has shown strong potential for preventing and treating prostate cancerprostate cancer, and areas with greater sunlight exposure have lower incidence and mortality for prostate, breast, and colon cancers, leading us to investigate a role for vitamin D in pancreatic cancer risk,” explained researcher Halcyon Skinner, PhD, of the department of preventive medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.
“Few studies have examined this association, and we did observe a reduced risk for pancreatic cancer with higher intake of vitamin D.”

“Because there is no effective screening for pancreatic cancer, identifying controllable risk factors for the disease is essential for developing strategies that can prevent cancer,” said Skinner.

Thanks for publishing this article on the problems of not getting enough Vitamin D.

I think the only thing I don’t really like about the article is the glass of milk. Yes, Vitamin D is often added to milk, but there are many problems with that.

First, the Vitamin D added to milk is synthetic, which is toxic to the liver.

Second, there is a much better source of Vitamin D, as you mention — sunlight. The best, cheapest, easiest way to get Vitamin D is to have sunlight exposure on the skin.

Here is an interesting article on that topic:

I tend to steer clear of milk, given all the hormones, antibiotics and pesticides on the cow’s food (which is concentrated into the milk).

Why not switch a picture of sunlight instead of the glass of milk? Just a thought.

    Thanks!

  2. 2 Drink Your Milk!

I’m going to disagree with the other poster about milk. My great grandmother and grandmother died of pancreatic cancer and the only time they drank milk was with coffee. My grandmother also had the beginning stages of osteoporosis.

I drink a LOT of milk. I buy a gallon a week with my husband. The way I look at it is I can’t get enough calcium. I love my dairy products - cheese, cottage cheese, milk, etc.

Milk is really GOOD for woman & men. Men can get pancreatic cancer and even osteoporosis.
