Symantec: Nintendo Wii, PS3 Are Vulnerable
Published by Robert Staehlin August 21st, 2007 in Gaming, Nintendo, Sony, PlayStation 3, Wii.According a security guru at Symantec, both Wii and PS3 are vulnerable to both phishing attacks and malicious viruses.
“Symantec has recently been using the Nintendo Wii to demonstrate that the vulnerabilities that exist on one platform are very likely to exist to some extent on other platforms such as games consoles. Our Security Response Operations Team identified that there was a vulnerability within the Adobe Flash Player on the Windows platform,” Symantec’s Ollie Whitehouse recently told Tech.co.uk.
“Then they demonstrated that it worked on the Macintosh and then finally they attempted it with the Wii as well and we found that it was just as susceptible to the same vulnerability.”
On the phishing front, Whitehouse said that because of a lack of an anti-phishing toolbar, “it’s conceivable at least in the short term that phishing attacks could become commonplace via a games console browser. Wii lends itself very well to that.”
He went on to say Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is more secure than either Wii or Sony’s PlayStation 3. This, Whitehouse claims, is due to the security implemented in every 360 game and piece of software.
The 360 is not as vulnerable because it has no web browser, not because of security features in it’s games!
Of course the browsers are vulnerable, THERE BROWSERS!!! that means thats just as stuipid as saying cell phones are vulnerable or psp’s. SHUT-UP! as for the viruses, it’s NOT POSSIBLE unless someone somehow stole the native code to the ps3 and programed a virus, PLUS the browser has no rights to write to the HDD, UNLESS specified by the user, besides, the extension is filtered, on top of that the Cache for the browser again, has NO write privilages to the OS or the HDD PERIOD. Symnatec, rethink your methods, or Hire ME!
Bull$hit. it sounds like another scam to get money, now that the gaming industry is making a very nice chunk of change. i was wondering when this would happen.
Symantec just wants to get some money from the video game industry OMG.
PS3 is %100 secured i douht the WII is secured since Nintendo doesn’t know much about high tech things. Sony will block any harm to us Xbox 360 loves virus since is made by Microsoft.
I think alot of the viruses are for the anti virus companies. How elso do they stay in business. If you do happen to get a really bad virus, yor anti virus cant get rid of it! so if viruses do appear of gaming consoles i will be thanking these people! Think about it they profit from others misery!
