Nintendo Wii Hard Drive Coming?

IGN talks Neo Geo Virtual Console titles could mean Wii hard drive There have been whispers about Wii getting a hard drive for a while now, and the chatter is growing with E3 fast approaching.

On IGN’s latest Wii-k in Review podcast, experts Mark Bozon and Matt Casamassina opined that since the upcoming Neo Geo Virtual Console titles will be so large, a Nintendo Wii hard drive would soon be announced to accomodate the girth.

From Go Nintendo:

Apparently, somewhere around the 33 minute mark Casamassina and Bozon discuss the large file sizes of Neo Geo VC games. This lead the pair to believe that Nintendo would be unveiling a Wii hard drive sometime soon. This fits perfectly with the Jeux-France rumor we posted that discussed the possibility of Nintendo announcing big hardware news at the upcoming E3.

Currently, Wii is the only next-generation console that lacks a hard drive.

I really don’t understand the point of spending the extra cash for a hard drive. Sure it would be great to download some Neo Geo titles, and believe me the roms are HUGE! However, for a cheap system that can’t display any HDef video or even play an audio disc for that matter, I don’t understand why anyone would want to fork over the money for a Wii HDD. Haven’t really figured out an intriguing reason for a huge HDD in the PS3, but for the 360 it makes sense: You can download redone HD compatible classics in the Arcade, you can download new modes characters and maps, you can download tv programs and HD movies, etc., etc., etc.

But you’re asking Wii owners to pay what will probably be top dollar for a Wii specific HDD for nothing more than Neo Geo roms?

If you ask me, Nintendo needs to focus on games and their online network before anything else. Just purchased yet another party game, Mario Party, another game that begs for online play yet the game was a major let down. None of the Wii titles, in my opinion, have stacked up to games like Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Halo, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Mass Effect, Forza, Gran Tourismo, etc. But hey, at least Nintendo is making news by offering a worthless HDD and Mario Strikers….an online Mario soccer game……

I think it makes perfect sense as i am reaching my limit of what i can store on the Wii HD at the moment, and as soon as downloading DS and Wii demos will come about i will jump on board that.

Also there are rumours flying about that Nintendo wants to put videos/magazines/music on the network.

Well Nintendo hasn’t announced anything yet so let’s not get too carried away. I’m sure that if Nintendo chooses to release a HDD for the Wii, it won’t be solely for accommodating NeoGeo games; there’s bound to be other reasons for this.

Anyway, there are many more games than Mario Strikers on the way that will be interesting and enjoyable.

If people don’t like the Wii, they should just play something else and quit complaining.

Sure you don’t need a HD for your Wii right now, but you will soon.

VC has been so popular that i imagine we will soon be seeing other options for download such as SegaCD and Saturn games. Those will need a HD.

Wii specific game downloads will be coming

DS demos that you store on your Wii will be coming

More storage space will be needed, although it is something for the more hardcore. This means there is no reason to put it in general purpose Wii, but release as a add on for people who need it.

I also don’t think it will cost all that much, external USB HD are pretty cheap now. Nintendo should be able to sell it at a very reasonable price and still make a profit.

Well, I had heard it mentioned in Wii development news that the Wii would be compatable with external hard drives off the shelf: maybe what the announcement is going to be an update on its firmware, if it cannot in fact do it already.

As far as great games go, well, it’s Nintendo. Either you like ‘em by now or you don’t

I love Nintendo and I am so happy for the success of the Wii. I love the DS and Wii and I wish nothing but the best for both systems. I will be buying the Wii HD as soon as it comes available and I will be buying the DS Browser too when that is available. Anyway, I am just a video game fan not a nintendo fanboy, I love the X-Box, 360, PS2, but not the PS3 so much. I hope that virtual console opens up to really old games like Atari 2600 and Colecovision, Commodore 64, some of the very old systems that you cannot find anywhere anymore. I miss dig dug and Mr. Do on my Colecovision.

Coool. I hope that this hard disk have at least 200 gigabytes, so I can use it to save my videos.

I give the first reply right.

I don’t need a harddrive and a harddrive on the shelves will just confuse the consumers. More titels for the 3-12 year old and the 25-99 year old as Nintendo’s new target group is. And make the wifi more understandable…

    Just my word of advice

of course the hard drive makes sense unless they make a special memory card where u can save ur vc games in them and still play em but the hard drive is better
